Initiative: Rescue Mission International (ReMI)
Program: Alternative Livelihood Support Programme for Rural Women
Objective: Reducing deforestation and unsustainable charcoal production by providing eco-friendly, income-generating opportunities for rural women.
Duration: Ongoing
Current Phase: First and Second Episodes
Locations: 5 Rural Communities across 3 Districts
Overview
ReMI’s Alternative Livelihood Support Programme is an initiative aimed at empowering rural women in areas with high rates of tree cutting and charcoal production. By promoting eco-friendly livelihoods, ReMI addresses both economic insecurity and environmental degradation. The program’s pilot phase introduced practical skills in liquid soap and thick bleach production, which can be sustained throughout the year, particularly during the non-farming season, providing stable income opportunities for women.
Training Summary
Participants: 50 women across 5 rural communities
Training Locations: 3 districts with high deforestation rates due to charcoal production
Skills Provided
- Liquid Soap Making: This eco-friendly soap alternative is easy to produce with locally sourced ingredients and has a high demand in local markets.
- Thick Bleach Production: This product serves as a disinfectant and cleaning agent, meeting local hygiene needs and providing an additional revenue stream for the women.
The training sessions were structured to be hands-on, allowing participants to gain practical knowledge of the entire production process. Women learned sourcing, production, packaging, and basic marketing skills, ensuring they could independently manage and scale their businesses.
Program Goals
1. Economic Empowerment: Enable women to generate income throughout the year, especially during off-farming seasons.
2. Environmental Conservation: Reduce dependency on tree cutting and charcoal production by offering viable, eco-friendly alternatives.
3. Capacity Building: Equip participants with sustainable livelihood skills that enhance their socio-economic resilience.
Community Impact
The program’s primary impact on the community includes:
- Income Stability: Women have expressed optimism about their increased financial security through access to these new skills. They are now able to support their families better without relying on environmentally destructive practices.
- Environmental Impact: As the program progresses, reductions in tree cutting and charcoal production are expected, preserving local forests and biodiversity.
- Social Influence: Trained women serve as role models in their communities, demonstrating that alternative livelihoods are feasible and beneficial, fostering a shift in local attitudes toward environmental conservation.
Challenges and Future Plans
Challenges
- Market Accessibility: Some communities face difficulties in reaching larger markets. Plans to establish a cooperative or linkage with urban markets could help mitigate this.
- Initial Investment Costs: While production costs are low, some women require initial financial support. ReMI is exploring partnerships to provide microloans or materials.
Future Plans
- Expanding Training: The program aims to extend to additional communities and introduce further eco-friendly livelihood options such as beekeeping and sustainable agriculture.
- Scaling Production: Plans are underway to support women in setting up small-scale production units, enhancing their ability to meet local demand and expand into nearby towns.
Conclusion
ReMI’s Alternative Livelihood Support Programme for rural women reflects a strong commitment to sustainable development, addressing both environmental and socio-economic challenges. By providing training in eco-friendly products like liquid soap and thick bleach, the program not only reduces reliance on deforestation-related income sources but also empowers women to be financially independent and sustainable business owners. This program’s success is a promising example of how targeted, community-based initiatives can contribute to broader environmental and economic goals in line with the SDGs.
